      This childhood home of American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882) was built in 1785-86.

      The huge volume of water rushing from Niagara Falls is crushed into the narrow Great Gorge, creating the Whirlpool Rapids that stretch for 1.6 km (1 mi). This is the elbow, where the river makes a sharp right-angled turn.
