      The Almonds Town Line School, Union School Section No.1, was located on the north-west corner of Kingston Road at the Whitby-Pickering Town Line. It was destroyed by fire on 4 November 1917 and replaced with another brick school house which was demolished around 1977.

      The Whitby Collegiate Institute was built in 1873 and was located on the south side of Colborne Street between King and Centre Streets. The school was demolished in 1975-1976.

      This is a colour photo showing the Saginaw Salt and Lumber Co mill operation in the distance. The large log boom and mill in the foreground of the photo was originally the Gordon Mill. This mill would later become the Asam Basket Factory (1919-1934).

      A test run of ore was brought in for processing. This test run exposed the fact that the smelter was poorly designed and as a result, this project failed. Notes found indicate that Firstbrook Bros. Box factory was established in 1919 using one of the buildings from this failed operation.
