      A parochial grammar school was set up in the late 1820s across from where St.Peter's Rectory is now. In the 1840s this became the Newcastle District Grammar School and later the Cobourg Grammar School till 1871. The headmaster at this time was F.W. Barron.

      Hamilton & Company Store was built in 1858 on the east side of Brock Street midway between Dundas and Colborne Streets. It was destroyed in the Great Fire of October 16, 1877.

      The 34th Regiment was militia for Ontario County. They were known as the 34th Regiment from 1866 until 1920. After such time they became known as Ontario Regiment (RCAC). This group is sometimes also referred to as the 34th (Ontario) Battalion.

      These soldiers were from various militia regiments which went to Ridgeway to repel the Fenian Raid of June 1866. This photo was taken at a studio at Dunnville near the site of the raid.

      This railway system was first established in Ontario in October of 1847, shortly after this the first train came through the woodstock train station in December of 1853 on the Great Western Railway which later became the Canadian National Railway.
