      Inscription reads 'First Gold Brick - Bankfield Consolidated Mine June 12, 1937'. The first brick weighed in at 601.19 ounces. The Bankfield Mine was one of the most modern mills in the gold mining industry for the time. The whole mill was entirely powered by electricity.

      Thomas Sawdon (1833-1916) married Harriet Boddy (1834-1916) at Yorkshire, England in 1858. In 1882 they immigrated to Canada first settling at Alliston and then moving to Whitby in 1905.       The post office was opened in 1910 at the south-west corner of Dundas and Brock Streets. It closed in 1956 and was demolished in 1959.

      St. Bernard's Separate School was opened in 1926 at the north-east corner of Centre and Dundas Streets. An addition was constructed in 1950. The school was closed in 1975 and demolished in 1987.

      King Street School was built in 1921 on 300 King Street. It was built to replace Henry Street School which burned down in 1920. In 1979 it was renamed R.A. Sennett Public School in honour of its first principal who served from 1921-1952. R. A. Sennett Public School closed in …
