      One of the first members of the North-West Mounted Police. Called "Lion of the Yukon" by Henry Woodside of the Yukon Sun during the Yukon Gold Rush.

      Entered the Navy in March 1798. In 1832 came to Canada as land grants were offered to British officers, soldiers and sailors. Settled in Medonte. Father of Sir Samuel Benfield Steele of North-West Mounted Police.
