      The Institution for the Deaf and Dumb in Halifax was founded in 1856. It was closed in 1961 when the Interprovincial School for the Education of the Deaf was opened in Amherst, Nova Scotia.

      Throughout its history, the military prison on Melville Island housed French and American prisoners of the Napoleonic Wars and the war of 1812 and German prisoners during the First World War. Melville Island is now home to a yacht club.
