      In order to convey water from the intake structure of the hydroelectric generating station near Terrace Bay,a tunnel through 1067 meters (3,500 feet) of solid rock had to be excavated.

      The people in this photo are probably taking a break from their labour at the Empress Mines. In 1898, Empress Mines were 10 km to the east of Terrace Bay. Empress Mine operated between 1895-1900 and was known to have some high grade gold bearing quartz.
