      The New Public School was later named Central Public School and then renamed again, to Thomas Gillbard Public School. In 2005 the school building was sold and conversion to condominiums began in 2006.

      The Bell Telephone Compnay came to Cobourg sometime between 1881 and 1882 when an exchange was set up and linked by long distance wires to Port Hope.       James Crossen settled in Cobourg in 1852. He was first engaged in the foundry business and in 1870 began to manufacture railway cars.
