      The huge volume of water rushing from Niagara Falls is crushed into the narrow Great Gorge, creating the Whirlpool Rapids that stretch for 1.6 km (1 mi). This is the elbow, where the river makes a sharp right-angled turn.

      The Falls View Bridge (or Upper Steel Arch Bridge, or Honeymoon Bridge) was built in 1898. However, it collapsed in January 1938 due to pressure from a giant ice jam from Lake Erie ice, caused by a bitter winter storm.
