      This is a brief history of some of the landmark buildings that were an integral part of the history of the Town of Thessalon in its early days. Long gone, some were lost to fire, some lost to age, some lost to what we like to call progress.

      The intent of this essay is to shares photos and information about the logging process "from forest to factory" and the lumber companies and mills that operated in the Thessalon area of Lake Huron's North Shore from the 1880s onward.

 The Sault Star, Jan 16, 1973, p. 14     The article shares the fact that the family stable was called Brookdale and was located in Barrie.

 Margi Turner, The Sault Star, 07-Jan-91, Section B, p.7     This is a clipping describing a major fire in downtown Thessalon that was caused by a faulty chimney located in Davey and Sons Marine in 1991.

 The Sault Star, December 4, 1972     This newspaper article shares information about Dr. John Bascomb St. John, a man born in the Thessalon area who went on to become an award winning journalist, respected education critic and special assistant to the Deputy Minister of Education in May 1971.

 Edith Cameron, The Sault Star, June 9, 1973     This is a newspaper clipping about the closure of the Forestry Prison Farm. The Prison Farm was located at McCreight's Dam north of Thessalon, and was operated by the Ontario Ministry of Corrections. The article outlines what might happen to the buildings following the closure of the prison.

 Mary Corbett, The Sault Star, July 24, 1971, p.14     This is a newspaper clipping that shares information about early settlements as described in the book "Our Northern Districts." The book describes settlers arriving with few assets or money, but succeeding by virtue of inexpensive land, good climate, natural resources, and their own hard work.
