      Spencer School was built in 1877 on lot 30, Concession 7 in Whitby Township. It was known as S.S. No.6. The school closed in 1965 but the building was used as Spencer Community Centre from 1967.

      William Edward Hewis (1865-1964) was a butcher in Whitby. He owned a butcher shop on Brock Street from the early 1900s until 1939. His two sons, William and Harry, took over the company.

      The Charles Lynde family lived on the south half of lot 32 of Concession 4 in Whitby Township. The Lynde family originally arrived in Whitby Township in 1804 and settled in the area known as Lynde Creek.

      The Ontario County Jail was built in 1853 at the south-east corner of King and Gilbert Streets and demolished in February 1960. It was replaced by the new jail on Victoria Street in 1958. Governor Schiller took over the jail in 1907.
